Earlier this year, you wrote to me about Ontario’s plan to move ahead with the HST. I want to thank you for taking the time to express your views. And I want to assure you that our tax changes are part of a comprehensive plan to make Ontario stronger.
As part of that plan, personal income tax rates are coming down in Ontario. Starting tomorrow, 93 per cent of taxpayers will get a permanent income tax cut.
Our plan also provides transition payments to Ontario families and tax cuts for small businesses. I encourage you to use our online calculator at www.rev.gov.on.ca/en/taxchange/calculators.html to determine how these tax cuts will help you.
We are merging two sales taxes into a single HST because it will strengthen our economy. A recent report (available at
wcmprod2.ucalgary.ca/publicpolicy/files/publicpolicy/Mintz%20ONLINE%20(Nov%2009).pdf)
says that our entire package of tax reforms, including the HST, will create 591,000 jobs and bring new business investment to our province.
The global recession of 2009 demonstrated that the world economy has changed. If we are going to get ahead and stay there, Ontario needs to make some changes too. And our package of tax reforms will make Ontario a better, more attractive place to invest and create jobs.
I wish you and your family all the best for the new year.
Dalton McGuinty
Premier of Ontario
